How Mozzaz's Journey with Assistive Communication Technology Shaped its Future into Virtual Care

Innovation often springs from personal experiences, and for the founders of Mozzaz, Pam and Rini, the journey began with a deeply personal quest to support their son, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of two and a half. Their pursuit led to the birth of Mozzaz, at the time a pioneering application that revolutionized assistive care technology and eventually evolved into the virtual care platform our clients experience today.

As we commemorate Autism Awareness Day 2024, it's not only a time to reflect on the progress made but also to reaffirm our commitment to supporting individuals with autism and their families with the continued growth of our platform.

Early Roots

Pam's dedication to their son's development knew no bounds. She immersed herself in learning about autism and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), ensuring he received the best care possible. Despite facing challenges coordinating care across a diverse team, Pam remained undeterred, recognizing the importance of effective communication among caregivers to provide the best possible treatment.

For those with ASD who are non-verbal, support through assistive communication tools is especially important for their inclusion and development. At the time this involved manual approaches, such as binders with Velcro-based pictures to help others understand and to communicate their needs. These methods, while valuable, were labor-intensive and often impractical, especially as their son continued to learn new words resulting in the navigation of multiple pages to express a single thought. Their frustration with these outdated methods fueled the desire for a more efficient and user-friendly solution.

Mozzaz Takes Off

The pivotal moment arrived when Pam and Rini recognized the need for a better assistive communication solution. Witnessing how their son struggled with using and engaging with existing AAC devices, which were often very expensive and didn’t always work in the way they should, highlighted the gap in available technology. Thus, Mozzaz was born, and at the initial inception consisted of the release of Mozzaz Care, a personalized assistive care app designed to streamline communication and enhance their son’s ability to express himself and his needs effectively.

Mozzaz Care quickly gained traction as it addressed the shortcomings of traditional communication methods. By leveraging mobile-friendly technology, the app offered a dynamic alternative to static communication boards and cumbersome binders. Individuals with autism and other communication barriers could now access a comprehensive library of symbols, words, and phrases on a portable device, empowering them to communicate with greater ease and independence in their day-to-day lives.

What Sets Mozzaz Apart

What truly sets Mozzaz apart is our holistic approach to care, addressing not only communication barriers but also educational and social needs. This involves catering care to the specific and unique needs of the individual, while identifying and addressing barriers to care. For the founder’s son, this came through visual schedules, interactive learning activities, and data tracking, empowering him to thrive. This naturally extended into the more modern platform for virtual care, incorporating the scheduling, communication, and care plan support from the initial application.

As time went on, we eventually arrived at the current Mozzaz Platform and Care Application, which embodies our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility across a variety of conditions. By leveraging technology, we bridge the gap between caregivers and individuals with complex care needs, facilitating seamless communication and ensuring continuity of care regardless of geographical constraints. This natural evolution has led us to support CMS reimbursable core services like remote patient monitoring and chronic care management while maintaining our offerings for those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and long-term care needs. Providing our clients with a robust platform that can be customized to the unique individual needs of your patient cohorts without compromising care.
